Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is traditionally the last day for people to indulge (and usually overindulge) before Ash Wednesday starts the sober weeks of fasting that come with Lent. the Mardi Gras season officially starts on Twelfth Night which is 12 days after Christmas on January 6th and always ends 46 days before Easter.
